From reality TV contestant to wrestling champion and singer
In short: Maria Kanellis' career is a masterclass in professional reinvention. After placing fifth in a 2004 talent search, she transitioned from a ditzy backstage interviewer to a decorated champion in TNA and a versatile performer across WWE, Ring of Honor, and beyond.
Born in Ottawa, Illinois, in 1982, Maria Kanellis began her journey in the spotlight through reality television. In 2004, she appeared on the show Outback Jack and competed in the WWE Diva Search, where she placed fifth. Despite not winning the contest, her presence led to a contract with WWE, where she initially served as a backstage interviewer and host of WWE KissCam, often playing a character designed to be both irritating and amusing to the roster.
Her evolution from a non-combatant to a professional wrestler was rapid. She began competing in the ring in 2005, facing opponents like Christy Hemme in a Lingerie Pillow Fight. By 2009, her popularity among fans was evident when she received the Slammy Award for Diva of the Year. Her career has since spanned multiple major promotions, including TNA, where she became a former Knockouts Champion, and Ring of Honor, where she was known as the 'First Lady of ROH.'
Beyond the wrestling ring, Kanellis has demonstrated significant versatility. She has worked as a manager, a model—notably appearing in a 2008 Playboy pictorial—and a singer, releasing her debut album, Sevin Sins, in 2010. Her career has also included appearances on the Celebrity Apprentice and roles in various wrestling storylines, often alongside her husband, Mike Bennett. This multifaceted career highlights a transition from scripted character work to a diverse portfolio of entertainment roles.
