The straight-arm pioneer who redefined freestyle and faced a life-altering diagnosis
In short: Michael Klim dominated the pool in the 1990s and 2000s, revolutionizing swimming with his signature straight-arm freestyle technique. A multi-time world record holder and Olympic gold medallist, his career spanned decades of triumph and physical struggle, culminating in a recent battle with a rare auto-immune disorder that changed his life forever.
Born in Poland in 1977, Michael Klim’s journey to the top of world swimming was unconventional. After living in India and Germany, his family settled in Melbourne in 1989. Klim quickly rose through the ranks, gaining international attention by the mid-1990s. He became a defining figure of the sport, particularly for his innovative straight-arm freestyle stroke. By the late 1990s, he was a global force, winning multiple medals at the 1998 World Aquatics Championships in Perth and setting world records in the 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle.
The 2000 Sydney Olympics served as a high-water mark for Klim, where he helped Australia shatter world records in relay events. Despite his success, his career was frequently interrupted by chronic injuries, including back and shoulder issues that sidelined him in 2002 and 2003. After multiple retirements and comeback attempts, Klim transitioned into business, founding a skincare brand and later a swim school in Bali. His resilience was tested again in 2020 when he was diagnosed with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, an auto-immune condition affecting his mobility.
Today, Klim is focused on advocacy and sharing his story. In 2024, he published an autobiography and launched a foundation to support others living with the same condition. His life, documented in a 2026 episode of Australian Story, reflects a transition from the intense pressure of elite athletic competition to a new role as a public advocate. His legacy remains tied to his technical contributions to swimming and his ability to navigate the physical toll of a high-performance career.
