In short: Born right-handed, Michael Moorer fought his entire professional career as a southpaw, becoming the first of his kind to capture a heavyweight world title. From his rapid rise through the ranks to his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, Moorer remains a singular figure in boxing history.

Michael Moorer’s path to boxing greatness began in Monessen, Pennsylvania, where his grandfather, a former New York Golden Gloves champion, first encouraged him to train at age 11. Despite being naturally right-handed, Moorer adopted a southpaw stance that defined his career. His amateur tenure saw him become a 1986 National Champion in the 156 lb weight class before he turned professional in 1988. He quickly established dominance, winning his first 35 professional bouts and securing 22 consecutive knockouts.

Moorer’s professional trajectory was marked by significant milestones and volatile shifts. In 1988, he captured the WBO light heavyweight title, defending it nine times before moving up to the heavyweight division. By 1994, he had defeated Evander Holyfield to become the first southpaw to win a lineal heavyweight championship. However, his reign was short-lived; in November 1994, he lost his undefeated record and his titles to 45-year-old George Foreman, who landed a decisive right hand in the tenth round. Moorer later regained the IBF heavyweight crown in 1996 by defeating Axel Schulz, cementing his status as a three-time heavyweight champion.

Beyond the ring, Moorer’s life was punctuated by personal challenges, including struggles with alcohol and legal issues, such as a 1991 arrest for assaulting a police officer. After a career spanning 1988 to 2008, he transitioned into roles as a boxing trainer and private investigator. His legacy is secured not only by his titles but by his rare versatility; he is one of only four boxers in the last century to win world titles at both light heavyweight and heavyweight, a feat that earned him a place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame class of 2024.
