How a macron over a vowel became a staple of Idaho political branding
In short: Senator Mike Crapo has represented Idaho in Congress since 1993, but his name remains a frequent point of confusion. To ensure voters pronounce it correctly as Cray-poe, his campaigns famously placed a macron over the letter a on all signage, a detail that became a signature of his long political career.
Born in 1951 in Idaho Falls, Michael Dean Crapo followed a path through Brigham Young University and Harvard Law School before returning to Idaho to practice law. His political ascent began in the state legislature, where he served in the Idaho Senate from 1984 to 1992, eventually rising to become president pro tempore. His career trajectory was influenced by his brother, Terry Crapo, a former majority leader in the Idaho House of Representatives who was considered a rising star before his death in 1982.
Crapo entered federal politics in 1993 as a U.S. representative and transitioned to the Senate in 1999. Over his tenure, he has established himself as a staunch conservative, earning a lifetime rating of 91.30 from the American Conservative Union. His legislative focus has been diverse, ranging from banking and finance to nuclear energy, where he has championed projects at the Idaho National Laboratory, including the establishment of the National Reactor Innovation Center. He also co-chairs the Senate Nuclear Caucus and the Congressional Sportsmen's Caucus.
His career has been marked by significant shifts in political strategy and rhetoric. While he once argued that Supreme Court nominees deserved up-or-down votes regardless of politics, he later supported withholding consent for Merrick Garland in 2016, arguing that the vacancy should be filled by the next president. This position contrasted with his support for an immediate vote on a nominee in 2020. Despite his long tenure and high-profile committee work, he has faced scrutiny, including an 'F' grade from the Lugar Center for his oversight work during the 116th Congress.
Throughout his time in Washington, Crapo has maintained a consistent stance on social and constitutional issues. He is a vocal opponent of abortion, a supporter of gun rights, and has consistently received high marks from the National Rifle Association. His electoral history reflects strong support within his state, with reelection margins ranging from 61% to 99.2% of the vote.
