In short: Militant accelerationism is a far-right ideology that views modern society as irredeemable. Instead of seeking political power, its adherents aim to trigger a total societal collapse through terrorism, infrastructure sabotage, and mass violence, believing that only a cleansing fire can pave the way for a new, white ethnonationalist order.

Militant accelerationism represents a radical departure from traditional fascist movements. While historical regimes like those in Nazi Germany or Fascist Italy sought to seize state power to transform their nations, modern accelerationists argue that contemporary society—defined by liberalism, democracy, and multiculturalism—is beyond repair. Consequently, they believe the only viable path forward is to hasten the inevitable demise of the current system by exacerbating social tensions and inducing chaos.

The ideology traces its roots to 1970s neo-Nazi figures like Joseph Tommasi, who founded the National Socialist Liberation Front, and his successor James Mason, whose newsletter and book, Siege, advocated for mass killings and sabotage. These ideas were later popularized in the 2010s by extremist networks such as the Iron March forum and the Atomwaffen Division. Proponents often target critical infrastructure, such as the power grid or the internet, to expedite collapse. The strategy is designed to provoke a revolutionary situation, with some advocates even accepting that the resulting violence will consume the vast majority of the population, leaving only those they perceive as superior.

The term itself gained traction in the late 2010s, partially influenced by the writings of Nick Land and the neoreactionary movement, though it remains distinct from earlier, unrelated economic theories of accelerationism. Today, the ideology is spread through decentralized networks like Terrorgram and popular cultural artifacts like Mike Ma's novella Harassment Architecture. Scholars such as Mattias Gardell note that this worldview is fundamentally nihilistic, viewing the nation as something that must die to be born anew. As the Christchurch shooter argued in his 2019 manifesto, the goal is not to improve life, but to make everything worse, radicalizing and exaggerating societal conflicts until the system breaks.

The Accelerationism Research Consortium and other analysts emphasize that this movement is defined by its commitment to violence as the sole means of achieving political goals. By promoting lone-wolf terrorism and infrastructure attacks, militant accelerationists seek to turn the modern era's perceived flaws against itself, effectively 'riding a tiger' to bring about a total revolution.
