From Floyd, Virginia to the screen: the rapid ascent of country singer Morgan Wade
In short: Morgan Wade’s trajectory from a college student recruiting bandmates on Craigslist to a touring country star and television actor is defined by raw honesty. Her music, characterized by a voice described as worn leather, draws deeply from her personal history of sobriety, mental health struggles, and the complexities of human relationships.
Born in 1994 in Floyd, Virginia, Wade’s early exposure to music came through local bluegrass events attended with her grandparents. Her path to professional songwriting began during her freshman year of college, following a breakup. By 2018, she had independently released her debut album, Puppets with My Heart, after finding musicians through Craigslist. A pivotal moment occurred later that year at FloydFest, where a chance encounter led to her music reaching Sadler Vaden, a guitarist in Jason Isbell’s band, the 400 Unit. This connection facilitated the production of her 2021 breakout album, Reckless.
Wade’s work is noted for its emotional vulnerability. Reckless, which reached number 14 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers charts, explored her experiences with sobriety and mental health. She has been open about her personal challenges, including developing an alcohol addiction at age 19 and achieving sobriety in 2017 at age 22. Her commitment to health extends beyond her music; she is an active powerlifter and runner. In 2024, she underwent a double mastectomy after testing positive for the RAD51D gene, a decision influenced by her family history of breast cancer.
Her creative output has been prolific, with five albums released between 2018 and 2025, including Psychopath and Obsessed. Beyond the studio, Wade has expanded her artistic reach into acting, making her debut on the show Dutton Ranch in May 2026. Her career is marked by a refusal to shy away from difficult subjects, whether in her songwriting—which Rolling Stone noted captures the intensity of relationships at their breaking point—or in her public life, where she maintains close personal connections, such as her friendship with Kyle Richards.
