How a messy breakup and a flea market meeting shaped a country music career
In short: Nikki Lane transitioned from fashion design to country music after a personal heartbreak prompted her to start songwriting. Her career trajectory shifted significantly when a chance encounter at a flea market led to a collaboration with Dan Auerbach, helping her refine a sound often compared to classic outlaw country icons.
Born in Greenville, South Carolina, in 1983, Nikki Lane initially pursued a career in fashion design. Her pivot to music was sparked by a difficult romantic separation; after a partner left her to record an album in Alabama, she began crafting her own country songs. This path led to her 2011 debut, Walk of Shame, and a subsequent move to Nashville, where she now balances her music career with operating her clothing store, High Class Hillbilly.
Lane’s second album, 2014’s All or Nothin’, marked a major turning point. Meeting Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys at a flea market resulted in him producing the record at his Easy Eye Sound Studio at no cost. The album received generally favorable reviews, with critics praising the production and Lane’s confident vocal delivery. Her later work has seen her collaborate with diverse artists, including Lana Del Rey on 2021’s Chemtrails Over the Country Club and the Dropkick Murphys on their 2022 Woody Guthrie-inspired project.
The production of her 2017 album, Highway Queen, was marked by personal and professional challenges. During the recording process near Dallas, her lead guitarist, Alex Munos, underwent cancer treatment, while her former drummer, Ben Eyestone, who played on her first two records, passed away from colon cancer in July 2017. Despite these hardships, Lane has continued to evolve, releasing her fourth album, Denim and Diamonds, in 2022. Produced by Josh Homme, the record showcases her ongoing development as an artist who is frequently dubbed the First Lady of Outlaw Country.
