How a 2005 Action Movie Became a Nuanced Study of Modern Intimacy
In short: The 2024 television adaptation of Mr. & Mrs. Smith ditches the original film's premise of competing assassins for a grounded exploration of two strangers forced into a high-stakes domestic charade. By prioritizing character chemistry and relationship dynamics over pure spectacle, the series reimagines the spy genre as a tense psychological drama.
Created by Francesca Sloane and Donald Glover, the series premiered on February 2, 2024, on Prime Video. Unlike the 2005 film directed by Doug Liman, which featured a married couple discovering they were rival spies, this version follows two strangers who independently join a mysterious organization. They are assigned the aliases John and Jane Smith and must maintain the cover of a married couple while executing missions dictated by an anonymous source via text. The first season consists of eight episodes, each set in a different locale, focusing heavily on the evolving interpersonal connection between the leads.
The production process was marked by significant shifts. Originally announced in 2021 with Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a co-creator and star, she departed later that year due to creative differences. Maya Erskine subsequently joined the project in 2022. The show earned critical acclaim, particularly for the performances of Glover and Erskine, and secured 16 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including nods for Outstanding Drama Series and acting categories. It also became one of the top five most-watched new series debuts on Prime Video in the United States.
The series has been renewed for a second season, which underwent its own evolution. While Sloane returns to oversee the production, the showrunner role for the new season was transitioned to Anna Ouyang Moench. Filming for the second season was relocated to Los Angeles to utilize tax credits, and the cast saw several changes, including the addition of actors like Mark Eydelshteyn and Talia Ryder. Despite the shift in personnel and the logistical complexities that delayed production into 2026, the series continues to build on the foundation of its debut, which maintained a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
