How one woman dominated the Ottoman Empire for decades from behind the harem walls
In short: Muhteşem Yüzyıl: Kösem chronicles the ascent of Mahpeyker Kösem Sultan, a slave who became the most powerful figure in Ottoman history. Spanning the reigns of multiple sultans, the series depicts her transition from a reluctant captive to a ruthless regent who navigated lethal palace politics to protect her dynasty.
The series follows the life of Kösem Sultan, beginning with her arrival at the Topkapı Palace as a young captive named Anastasia. Gifted to Sultan Ahmed I, she eventually converts to Islam and adopts the name Mahpeyker, later earning the title Kösem. Her rise is defined by her ability to outmaneuver veteran rivals like Safiye Sultan, securing her position as Haseki Sultan through political crises and palace coups. As the Ottoman Empire faces internal instability, she emerges as a formidable force, eventually becoming the Naib-i Saltanat, or Regent, for her son Murad IV.
The narrative explores the brutal realities of the Ottoman throne, including the law of fratricide and the psychological toll of the Kafes, where princes lived in constant fear of execution. Kösem’s influence is tested by her own children, particularly Murad IV, who strips her of her regency to establish absolute authority. Their ideological rift highlights the tension between Kösem’s desire to preserve the dynasty through diplomacy and Murad’s iron-fisted military rule. Following Murad’s death, Kösem manages the erratic reign of Ibrahim I, eventually consenting to his deposition and execution when his instability threatens the state.
The final act of the series centers on the power struggle between Kösem and Turhan Hatun, the mother of the young Sultan Mehmed IV. In 1648, Kösem attempts to maintain her dominance by securing the title of Büyük Valide, but her plan to replace the Sultan with a more compliant brother leads to her downfall. Her life ends in a violent coup orchestrated by Turhan Hatun, marking the symbolic conclusion of the Sultanate of Women. The series, which concluded on 27 June 2017, serves as a dramatic exploration of the political machinations that shaped the Ottoman Empire.
