From wrestling mats to the halls of Indian governance
In short: Murlidhar Mohol’s political trajectory illustrates a classic path of grassroots organization and local leadership culminating in national influence. By moving from ward-level organizing to the Mayoralty of Pune, he navigated the complexities of urban infrastructure and environmental policy before entering the central government as a Minister of State.
Mohol’s political identity is rooted in his early involvement with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at age 12. This foundation led to a career within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where he rose through various municipal roles. He began organizing at the ward level in Pune in 1993, eventually serving as a member of the Municipal Board of Education in 2002 and winning a municipal by-election for the Kelewadi Ward in 2006. His local influence peaked when he was elected Mayor of Pune in November 2019, succeeding Mukta Tilak.
During his tenure as Mayor (2019–2022), Mohol focused on large-scale infrastructure and sustainability. Bloomberg Philanthropies designated Pune among the 50 Champion Cities for the 2021 Global Mayors Challenge during his time as leader. This recognition was specifically tied to innovative urban solutions developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, notably a plan to increase electric vehicle (EV) adoption to combat vehicular pollution, which accounts for nearly 25% of particulate pollution in the city. He also championed the Pune Metro Rail Project, which included a solar-powered segment inaugurated in March 2022 that aimed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 25,000 tons annually.
Mohol’s portfolio expanded into environmental and healthcare sectors as well. With Official Development Assistance (ODA) of Rs. from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, he significantly contributed to the Rivers Mula-Mutha project for Pollution Abatement. 1470 crore. Additionally, he proposed the Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College during the 2017-18 Standing Committee Budget session, securing an initial allocation of Rs. 25 crores. Following a 123,038 vote victory in the Pune Lok Sabha seat during the 2024 general election, Mohol became Minister of State for Cooperation and Civil Aviation within the Narendra Modi administration.
