Coldplay built an entire fictional solar system to explore the human experience
In short: For their ninth studio album, Coldplay constructed a cosmic narrative set within a planetary system called The Spheres. Each track corresponds to a specific celestial body, from planets to a nebula. By framing their songs as transmissions from alien worlds, the band sought a fresh perspective on universal human themes.
Released in October 2021, Music of the Spheres serves as the first volume of a series, followed by 2024's Moon Music. The project, produced by Max Martin, was envisioned as a concept album where the band members imagined how musicians might sound in distant corners of the universe. This sci-fi framing was heavily inspired by the Star Wars franchise, specifically the cantina scene, which prompted the band to wonder about the nature of extraterrestrial artistry. By adopting this alien persona, lead singer Chris Martin aimed to explore human life with a sense of creative freedom that might be harder to access through more conventional songwriting.
The album's fictional setting, The Spheres, is a complex system comprising nine planets, three natural satellites, a central star named Supersolis, and a nebula known as Coloratura. Each track on the record is linked to one of these celestial bodies, which even possess their own invented languages, such as Kaotican or Spheric. This world-building effort extended beyond the music itself; the band collaborated with Amazon Music to create immersive pop-up installations in four global cities, allowing fans to interact with the system through kinetic walkways and augmented reality.
While critics offered mixed reviews, often citing the album's pop-heavy production as a departure from the band's earlier work, the closing track, Coloratura, received widespread acclaim. Running over ten minutes, the song was praised for its unconventional structure and ambition, with many reviewers comparing its sprawling, atmospheric quality to the work of Pink Floyd. Despite the mixed reception, the album achieved significant commercial success, becoming the first release of the 2020s to debut at the top of the UK Albums Chart with over 100,000 units sold. The record also served as the foundation for a massive, sustainability-focused world tour, featuring innovations like rechargeable show batteries and stages built from recycled materials.
