In short: Released in October 2024, Moon Music is the second volume of Coldplay's Music of the Spheres project. While critics were divided on the lyrics, the album achieved massive commercial success, becoming the first British band since 2016 to top both the UK and US charts simultaneously.

Moon Music is a pop rock album that draws from funk, afrobeat, and electronic influences. According to frontman Chris Martin, the record's concept explores the emotional arc of a single day: starting with feelings of depression, isolation, and being unable to be oneself, and ending with a sense of complete acceptance. Martin explained that the title reflects the idea of accepting life's different phases and shining one's light without expectation. The project's first installment was titled From Earth with Love. To promote the release, the band launched various immersive listening pop-up events globally. They also partnered with Record Store Day for US premieres. Additionally, a drone light show in South Korea celebrated the launch.

The album's production was a global effort, with sessions held at the Punta Paloma studio in Tarifa, Spain, while the band toured cities like Rome, Düsseldorf, and Helsinki. The project featured collaborations with artists such as Little Simz, Burna Boy, and Elyanna. While the musical diversity and melodies received praise, some critics, such as those at The Guardian and Pitchfork, were critical of the lyrics, describing them as corny or lacking depth.

Beyond the music, the album serves as a benchmark for sustainable music production. The CD versions were manufactured using 90% recycled polycarbonate, and the vinyl records were made from nine recycled PET-plastic bottles. These initiatives, sourced from post-consumer waste, reportedly prevented the use of more than 30 metric tonnes of virgin plastic. This commitment to sustainability has led to the group re-issuing their entire discography on recycled vinyl.
