In short: Formed in the shadow of the World Trade Center's collapse, My Chemical Romance transformed tragedy into a multi-platinum legacy. Discover how a band born from a single moment of crisis climbed the global charts to define an era of alternative rock.

The origins of My Chemical Romance are rooted in a moment of profound historical trauma. Lead vocalist Gerard Way formed the group in September 2001, immediately following the destruction of the World Trade Center. This period of intense upheaval set the stage for a career defined by dramatic narratives and massive commercial success. This formative period of 2001 led to a prolific output that eventually included five EPs and a vast collection of music videos.

The band's early trajectory saw them move from the independent Eyeball Records to the major label Reprise Records. Their debut, released in July 2002, achieved gold certification in the United Kingdom. However, it was their 2004 release, Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, that propelled them into the mainstream, selling more than three million copies and producing hits like 'Helena'. The band's early work through Eyeball Records, specifically their debut, has moved over 285,000 units. This momentum continued as they transitioned to Reprise Records for their subsequent sophomore effort.

Their creative peak included the 2006 album The Black Parade, which reached number two on the Billboard 200 and earned 4× platinum certification from the RIAA. The single 'Welcome to the Black Parade' notably became their only number-one hit in the UK. While the band announced a breakup in early 2014, a 2019 reunion and the 2022 single 'The Foundations of Decay' signaled a new chapter. Subsequent releases, including the 2010 record Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, maintained chart relevance through tracks such as 'Sing'. They also released several compilation projects, including the 2013 Conventional Weapons box set.

By late 2026, the band's impact in the United States was measurable by significant figures, with 8.7 million album-equivalent units sold, including 5.6 million from direct album sales. This impressive-scale success is underpinned by a massive catalog of 24 singles and various live and compilation releases. Their total US album-equivalent sales reflect a sustained presence in the industry.
