The 1876 truce that ended the baseball war
In short: Before the modern era of unified leagues, professional baseball was a battlefield of rival organizations. The National League survived a period of intense competition and player poaching, eventually forging a peace pact that created the legendary World Series we recognize today.
The National League, originally the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs, was founded in 1876 to replace the unstable National Association of Professional Base Ball Players. That predecessor had struggled with weak authority, inconsistent scheduling, and a mere $10 entry fee that left clubs with little incentive to follow rules. While the National League established itself as the 'Senior Circuit,' its supremacy was not immediately guaranteed.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the league faced significant challenges from rival organizations, such as the American Association. The most intense conflict, known as the 'baseball war,' occurred between the National League and the newly formed American League. The AL, based in the Midwest, aggressively expanded into the NL's East Coast territory, actively wooing star players away from established NL squads.
A decisive turning point arrived in 1903. Following the period of conflict in 1901 and 1902, the two leagues established a truce. This agreement recognized both as legitimate major leagues and introduced the World Series, an annual contest between the champions of each league. While the leagues remained separate legal and business entities with their own presidents until after the 1999 season, this peace pact laid the foundation for the modern Major League Baseball structure.
For decades, this separation allowed the leagues to develop distinct identities. The National League was long characterized by 'smallball' tactics and the absence of a designated hitter—a rule the American League adopted in 1973. However, the lines have blurred significantly following the introduction of interleague play in 1997 and the National League's eventual adoption of the designated hitter in 2022.
