How a Japanese voice actor built a massive digital empire beyond the recording booth
In short: Natsuki Hanae is a household name in anime, known for voicing iconic characters like Tanjiro Kamado and Ken Kaneki. Yet, his influence extends far beyond the screen. By blending traditional voice acting with a thriving YouTube presence, Hanae has cultivated a massive, multi-platform community that transcends the boundaries of conventional entertainment.
Born on June 26, 1991, Natsuki Hanae began his career path early, deciding to pursue voice acting while still in high school. His professional journey officially commenced in November 2009 when he joined the agency Across Entertainment. His breakthrough came with a leading role in the series Tari Tari, where he also demonstrated his versatility by contributing as a composer for two episodes. His early promise was recognized at the 9th Seiyu Awards, where he secured the Best Rookie accolade.
Hanae's career is defined by a diverse portfolio of roles, ranging from the determined Tanjiro Kamado in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba to the complex Ken Kaneki in Tokyo Ghoul. His filmography includes significant parts in major productions such as Your Lie in April, Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma, and The Case Study of Vanitas. Beyond traditional acting, he expanded his reach through radio hosting alongside Ryōta Ōsaka on the program Ōsaka Shiritsu Hanae Gakuen.
In March 2019, Hanae pivoted toward digital content creation by launching a YouTube channel focused on Let's Play videos. The response was rapid; he gained over 500,000 subscribers within just seven months. This digital footprint continued to grow, and by July 23, 2021, he announced on Twitter that his combined social media following across platforms had exceeded two million people. This shift highlights a modern evolution in how voice actors engage with their audience, moving from purely performance-based work to direct, personal interaction.
Outside of his professional life, Hanae has shared milestones with his followers, including his marriage in 2016 to a woman five years his senior and the birth of his fraternal twin daughters in 2020. Like many public figures, he has navigated personal challenges, including a recovery from COVID-19 in early 2022. His ability to balance a prolific acting career with a massive online presence marks him as a unique figure in the contemporary Japanese entertainment landscape.
