In short: Contrary to popular myth, porcupines do not shoot their spines at attackers. These animals are actually masters of defense who rely on easily detachable, barbed quills that lodge firmly into any predator that gets too close. While they cannot launch their weapons, they are formidable pincushions when threatened.

New World porcupines, belonging to the family Erethizontidae, are stocky, quill-bearing rodents found across the Americas. Despite sharing a name with Old World porcupines, they are not closely related, showing closer evolutionary ties to cavy-like rodents such as agoutis and pacas. These animals are primarily arboreal, though the North American porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is a notable exception that spends significant time on the ground and inhabits diverse environments from Canada to northern Mexico.

The defining feature of these rodents is their quills, which are modified guard hairs. Unlike Old World species that have quills in clusters, New World porcupines possess single quills interspersed with hair and underfur. When under duress, they erect these spines to create a defensive barrier. If an attacker makes contact, the barbed tips lodge into the skin, detaching from the porcupine. While these quills are not poisonous, they can cause severe damage to internal organs and are notoriously difficult to remove.

Beyond their defensive armor, these rodents exhibit unique adaptations for their environment. Many tropical species possess prehensile tails, which they use to navigate the canopy, often aided by stiff bristles on the underside of the tail tip for extra grip. They are generally solitary and nocturnal, feeding on a diet that ranges from fruits and seeds to bark and leaves. While their reproductive biology remains understudied for many species, it is known that females spend the vast majority of their lives either pregnant or lactating, typically producing only one or two offspring after a gestation period of about 200 days.
