In short: Three Kansas City teens embark on a chaotic journey to Los Angeles, convinced they are slated to perform alongside Green Day on New Year's Eve. What begins as a misguided adventure triggered by a cruel hoax evolves into a genuine musical breakthrough for their fictional band, the Analog Dogs.

Directed by Lee Kirk, the 2025 comedy Nimrods—originally titled New Year's Rev—follows best friends Tommy and Fred, along with their cautious drummer Chad. The trio is driven by a deep obsession with the band Green Day. The plot is set in motion when Keith, a friend of Tommy's older brother Wayne, tricks the boys into believing their band, the Analog Dogs, has secured a coveted opening slot for a Green Day concert in Los Angeles. This deception prompts the teenagers to steal Wayne's car and embark on a cross-country trek, despite Tommy lacking a driver's license.

The journey is marked by a series of mishaps, including fueling the car with diesel and a brief stint performing in an ice cream truck. Along the way, the group faces internal friction, a brush with a dangerous motel manager, and the pressures of maintaining their punk rock identity. The film features appearances by the real members of Green Day—Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tré Cool—who play themselves. The project grew out of a long-standing creative relationship between Kirk and Armstrong, who previously collaborated on the 2016 film Ordinary World.

Upon reaching the concert, the boys discover the truth about the prank, yet they manage to infiltrate the venue. In a climactic turn, Fred is invited onstage to play guitar with Green Day. The experience proves transformative; the band members reveal they have heard and enjoyed the Analog Dogs' song 'Bored.' This validation provides the young musicians with a legitimate opportunity to record and perform, turning their desperate, prank-driven pilgrimage into a genuine launchpad for their musical ambitions. The film, which features a soundtrack including both Green Day classics and original tracks, received generally positive feedback for its energetic spirit.
