How a 1960s arena earned its reputation as the loudest building in the NBA
In short: Opened in 1966, Oakland Arena evolved from a standard multi-purpose venue into a legendary sporting cathedral. Known as Roaracle during the Golden State Warriors' championship era, the arena became famous for its deafening decibel levels and record-breaking crowds before the team relocated to San Francisco in 2019.
Originally constructed as the Oakland Coliseum Arena, the venue served as the home for the California Seals hockey team and later the Golden State Warriors. By the mid-1990s, the facility was considered outdated, with a capacity of just over 15,000. Rather than building a new structure, ownership invested US$121 million in a massive renovation that gutted the interior while preserving the original foundation and roof. This project, completed in 1997, expanded the seating capacity to 19,596 for basketball.
The arena's cultural footprint extends far beyond basketball. It has hosted iconic musical acts ranging from Frank Sinatra and The Rolling Stones to Marvin Gaye and Beyoncé. In 1974, the venue hosted the recording of Marvin Gaye's million-selling live album, marking his return to touring. The arena also served as the home for the ABA's Oakland Oaks, who won the 1969 championship, and has hosted diverse events including professional wrestling and roller derby.
The venue's identity shifted significantly in 2006 when it was rebranded as Oracle Arena. During the Warriors' resurgence between 2012 and 2019, the building earned the nickname Roaracle, reflecting the intense atmosphere generated by its fans. Attendance records were repeatedly broken during this period, peaking at 20,737 fans during a 2008 game against the Denver Nuggets. Following the Warriors' departure, the arena reverted to its original name, continuing to host major international performers like Suga of BTS and Stray Kids.
