The Phoenix arena that has worn many names and many identities
In short: From its $89 million opening in 1992 to its nickname 'The Purple Palace,' this Phoenix landmark has hosted everything from NBA Finals to Frank Sinatra. Whether it is a home for the Suns or a stage for Beyoncé, the venue's identity is as fluid as its diverse schedule of events.
Opened on June 6, 1992, as the America West Arena, the 1 million square foot venue was built for $89 million. Over the decades, it has undergone several rebrandings, operating under names such as the US Airways Center, Talking Stick Resort Arena, and the current Footprint Center. This versatility is reflected in its capacity, which shifts depending on the event: it can seat 17,071 for basketball or 17,716 for in-the-round concerts. The facility spans an 11-acre site located just one block from Chase Field. Its seating configuration also accommodates 12,565 spectators for end stage concerts and 4,379 for theatre events.
The arena serves as a central hub for Arizona sports. It is the home of the NBA's Phoenix Suns and the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury. It also hosted the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes from their arrival on July 1, 1996, until their final home game in Phoenix city limits on December 15, 2003. Additionally, it has been home to the Arizona Rattlers of the Indoor Football League and the Phoenix Roadrunners of the ECHL.
Beyond sports, the venue has a storied history of entertainment. It hosted Frank Sinatra during one of his final concert tours on December 10, 1993, and has seen legendary performances from artists like Bon Jovi, U2, and Beyoncé. Beyoncé's relationship with the arena was particularly prolific, with multiple appearances between 2004 and 2013 before her Arizona shows moved to Glendale. The arena has also been a significant site for combat sports, hosting notable boxing matches and various UFC events. This arena previously held the Arizona Sandsharks, a team from the now-defunct Continental Indoor Soccer League. Furthermore, it has been a significant site for professional wrestling, featuring events from WWE and AEW.
