The Greek Wonder that nearly collapsed under its own weight
In short: Once dubbed 'The modern Greek Wonder,' Athens' largest stadium has survived everything from legendary football derbies to massive structural renovations. But after decades of hosting icons like Pink Floyd and Madonna, a sudden safety closure in 2023 left fans wondering if this architectural marvel would ever reopen.
Completed in 1982, the Olympic Stadium in Marousi was a revolutionary feat of engineering. Its construction utilized a prefabrication method for 34 massive pillars, each weighing 60 and 600 tons. The stadium's most striking features are its four 62-metre tall pillars that support the floodlights. During the 1980s, it became the epicenter of Greek football, as the nation's three largest clubs—Panathinaikos, Olympiacos, and AEK Athens—all used the venue as their home ground at various intervals.
The stadium underwent a massive transformation for the 2004 Summer Olympics. A signature roof, designed by Santiago Calatrava, was added to the structure. This engineering marvel cost €256.2 million and consists of two giant arcs spanning 304 metres. The roof, weighing 18,700 tons, is covered by 5,000 polycarbonate panels and is designed to withstand earthquakes up to magnitude 8 and winds of 120 km/h.
Despite its prestige, the stadium's history is marked by volatility. It has hosted legendary musical acts, including Pink Floyd in 1989 and Madonna in 2008, but also witnessed intense violence, such as a 2012 derby where Molotov cocktails were thrown into the stands. By the early 2020s, the venue had fallen into disrepair, leading to a total shutdown in October 2023 due to safety concerns. Following the removal of unsafe roof panels, the stadium finally reopened in May 2024, with further structural reinforcements and upgrades expected to continue through 2026.
