In short: Designed to resemble a fortress, the Agia Sophia Stadium is more than a sports venue. Built on the site of the former Nikos Goumas Stadium, this newest stadium in Greece commemorates AEK Athens' roots in Constantinople through its architecture and name.

The stadium's design is deeply symbolic, intended to resemble a castle. This aesthetic choice honors the club's origins in Constantinople, with the structure's exterior inspired by the city's historic Walls of Constantinople. The name Agia Sophia itself commemorates the Byzantine-built Hagia Sophia, linking the club's identity to its ancestral home.

The project's journey was marked by decades of legal and financial hurdles. In 2003, former AEK president Giannis Granitsas proposed a new stadium following damage from the 1999 Athens earthquake, but the plan was halted by the Council of State for being unconstitutional. Later, in 2007, a 50,000-capacity project at Ano Liosia was abandoned due to a lack of funds and fan support.

Construction finally reached completion in October 2022, following a revitalized plan reintroduced by Dimitris Melissanidis in 2013. The final structure features an all-seater capacity of 32,500, making it the third largest football stadium in Greece. Beyond matches, the site serves as a cultural landmark, including a museum dedicated to the Greek refugees who left Asia Minor in 1922.

The stadium's commercial identity has shifted alongside its ownership. Originally secured under a five-year naming rights deal with OPAP starting in 2022, the venue became the Allwyn Arena in early 2026 following a corporate rebranding. However, for UEFA competitions, it maintains the name AEK Arena to comply with regulations against sponsor-named venues.
