Is a single state the solution or a delusion for the region?
In short: While the two-state solution dominates diplomacy, a single-state vision is resurfacing. But beneath the debate lies a fundamental conflict of identity: can a single territory accommodate two distinct national aspirations, or does one vision inevitably erase the other?
The 'one-state solution' is far from a modern invention. Its roots trace back to the early 20th century, even including radical proposals from Orthodox Jewish writers who advocated for intermarriage between Jews and Muslims to bridge the divide. Today, the concept is far from monolithic, manifesting in irreconcilable interpretations that range from left-wing calls for full equality to far-right visions of Jewish supremacy.
The core of the impasse is the tension between Zionism and binationalism. Zionism, an ideology promoting Jewish statehood and nationality, seeks a safe haven for the Jewish people. A single state would likely transform Israel into a binational state where Jews could become a minority, effectively ending its character as a Jewish state. Some proponents of a single state, including members of the Likud party, argue for annexing the West Bank to maintain Israeli control, though critics label this approach delusional.
Various models exist, from a unitary state with equal rights for all—similar to the British Mandate—to a federal system with shared powers, or even a confederation where two independent states share certain residency rights. However, empirical support for these ideas remains remarkably low. A 202<0xA0>23 survey showed support for a democratic one-state solution at only 23% among Palestinians and 20% among Israeli Jews. Furthermore, a September 2024 Palestinian poll revealed that just 10% of respondents supported a single state providing equal rights for both peoples.
The debate is further complicated by the 'from the river to the sea' slogan. While some view it as an aspirational call for human rights, many Israelis and members of the global Jewish community perceive it as a call for the destruction of Israel. For a vast majority of Palestinians, the slogan represents the establishment of a Palestinian state spanning the entire territory.
