How a dismissed metal pioneer became a global icon and reality television star
In short: Ozzy Osbourne’s career spanned from the birth of heavy metal with Black Sabbath to a surprise second act as a reality television personality. Despite being fired in 1979 for substance abuse, he reinvented himself as a solo powerhouse, selling over 100 million albums and leaving an indelible mark on rock history.
Born in Birmingham in 1948, John Michael Osbourne rose to fame as the lead vocalist of Black Sabbath. Formed in 1968, the band pioneered heavy metal with a dark, ominous sound that resonated globally. Their early albums, including 1970's Black Sabbath and Paranoid, became foundational texts for the genre. However, internal tensions and Osbourne’s struggles with drugs and alcohol led to his dismissal from the group in 1979.
Following his departure, Osbourne launched a successful solo career with the 1980 release of Blizzard of Ozz, managed by his future wife, Sharon. This era was defined by his partnership with guitarist Randy Rhoads, whose tragic death in a 1982 plane crash profoundly affected Osbourne. Despite personal turmoil and controversies—including accusations of promoting Satanism and a notorious incident involving a bat—Osbourne’s solo work achieved massive commercial success, with his first seven solo albums earning multi-platinum status in the United States.
In the early 2000s, Osbourne reached a new generation of fans through the MTV reality series The Osbournes, which offered an intimate, often humorous look at his family life. Throughout his later years, he navigated health challenges, including a long-term battle with Parkinson’s disease. Osbourne performed his final concert in Birmingham on July 5, 2025, and passed away on July 22, 2025, at age 76. His legacy remains cemented by two Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions and his enduring influence on the heavy metal landscape.
