From Welsh schoolboy to Broadway winner: the versatile career of actor Owen Teale
In short: Born in North Cornelly, Owen Teale transformed from a rebellious student into a celebrated character actor. While global audiences recognize him as the stern Ser Alliser Thorne from Game of Thrones, his career spans decades of diverse roles, from classic stage dramas to contemporary thrillers and sports comedies.
Owen Teale was born on 20 May 1961 to Roy and Louise Teale. His path to acting began during his time at Cynffig Comprehensive School in Kenfig Hill, where he was suspended for disciplinary reasons. It was a teacher named Mr Davis who first sparked his interest in the craft, eventually leading him to train at the Guildford School of Acting.
Teale made his television debut in 1984 with The Mimosa Boys, a film centered on the Falklands War, followed by his film debut in 1989's War Requiem. His stage work earned high acclaim in 1997 when he received a Tony Award for his portrayal of Torvald in the Broadway production of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, starring opposite Janet McTeer.
Beyond his stage success, Teale has maintained a prolific screen career. He is widely known for his recurring role as Ser Alliser Thorne in HBO's Game of Thrones, a part he secured in 2011 after replacing Derek Halligan. His filmography includes appearances in Robin Hood, King Arthur, and the 2020 sports comedy Dream Horse. On television, his credits range from the police drama Line of Duty to the supernatural series A Discovery of Witches and the oil rig thriller The Rig.
Outside of his professional life, Teale has been married twice, first to actress Dilys Watling and later to actress Sylvestra Le Touzel. He is an avid golfer and holds an honorary membership at the Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club. His work continues to evolve, with recent projects including the 2025 series Sandokan.
