The Beatles compilation that became the band's final major studio-era release
In short: While not a traditional studio album, Past Masters is the essential collection of every Beatles track missing from their original UK albums and US Magical Mystery Tour. Compiled by historian Mark Lewisohn, this set captures the band's evolution through singles, EPs, and rare international releases from 1962 to 1970.
When the Beatles' core catalogue was standardized in 1987, the band's discography required a definitive home for the stray tracks that defined their career but lacked a place on their primary albums. Past Masters was created to fill this void, gathering the A- and B-sides of singles, the contents of the Long Tall Sally EP, and various unique recordings. This includes German-language versions of hits, tracks specifically recorded for the American market, and even a contribution to a charity compilation.
The collection was first issued on 7 March 1988 as two separate volumes on CD and cassette. By late 1988, it arrived as a double LP set in the US on 24 October and in the UK on 10 November. Over time, the release evolved; the 2009 remastering replaced the original mono mixes of 'From Me to You' and 'Thank You Girl' with stereo versions. This 2009 reissue also saw the removal of Mark Lewisohn's name from the liner notes, while a dedicated Mono Masters set was introduced for purists seeking the original mono mixes.
The scope of the collection spans the entirety of the band's active years, with Volume One covering recordings from 1962 to 1965 and Volume Two encompassing 1965 to 1970. It serves as a vital historical document, preserving the 'Wildlife' version of 'Across the Universe' and the US-only track 'Bad Boy'. Because it consolidates these disparate pieces into a cohesive structure, it is officially recognized as the 14th and final major release in the Beatles' storied catalogue, cementing its status as an indispensable companion to their studio albums.
