How one Brazilian fighter became Bellator's most decorated champion
In short: Patrício Pitbull is widely considered the greatest fighter in Bellator MMA history. From his professional debut at age 16 to becoming a simultaneous two-weight champion, his career is a masterclass in resilience, marked by intense rivalries and an unrelenting drive to reclaim gold.
Born in the outskirts of Natal, Brazil, Patrício André de Sousa Freire began his journey into mixed martial arts through Brazilian jiu-jitsu. At age ten, he turned to the discipline to help combat the stigma of his physical size. By his teenage years, he was training at the renowned Chute Boxe academy alongside MMA legends like Wanderlei Silva and Mauricio Rua. This early training helped him overcome insecurities regarding his stature. He eventually honed his skills at the famed academy alongside other notable stars.
Freire's professional career began in March 2004 when he was just 16 years old. He spent his first five and a half years competing in Brazil, building an undefeated 12–0 record. His transition to the American Bellator MMA scene was marked by both triumph and setback; he lost his initial tournament final to Joe Warren via split decision in June 2010, but he would eventually find his way to the top. After his early losses, he secured a victory over Daniel Mason-Straus to earn a title shot. He later achieved a knockout victory against Daniel Weichel.
His dominance is evidenced by his multiple reigns as the Bellator Featherweight Champion. He became the second fighter in the organization's history to hold titles in two different weight classes simultaneously after defeating Michael Chandler for the Lightweight World Championship in May 2019. Despite significant obstacles—including a broken hand that delayed a title shot in 2011 and a broken shin during a 2016 bout against Benson Henderson—Freire has remained a central figure in the sport, recently securing his third Featherweight Championship reign in 2022. He eventually reclaimed the featherweight title by defeating A. J. McKee via unanimous decision. His success continued with a convincing win over Ádám Borics.
