The deep-sea explorer who spent decades uncovering the secrets of the sunken Titanic
In short: Known as Mr. Titanic, Paul-Henri Nargeolet was a veteran French diver who dedicated his life to the abyss. From clearing naval mines to mapping shipwrecks, his career spanned decades of underwater discovery. His final mission aboard the Titan submersible ended in tragedy, marking the end of a legendary maritime career.
Born in 1946, Paul-Henri Nargeolet began his professional life in the French Navy. Between 1964 and 1986, he served as an officer specializing in deep-sea intervention and mine clearance. His early career included commanding a specialized diving unit in Cherbourg and piloting submarines for the Undersea Intervention Group. During these years, he gained a reputation for retrieving submerged aircraft and weapons, and even discovered a Roman-era shipwreck at a depth of 70 metres.
In 1986, Nargeolet began his long association with the French national oceanographic research agency, leading his first expedition to the Titanic in 1987. This mission was historic, as it was the first to successfully recover artefacts from the site. Over the following decades, he became a central figure in Titanic research, eventually serving as the director of the Underwater Research Program for RMS Titanic, Inc. His expertise was not limited to the famous liner; he also searched for the flight recorder of Air France Flight 447 and located the 17th-century wreck of La Lune.
Nargeolet was a prolific contributor to the public understanding of the deep sea. He directed underwater film projects, authored a book about his expeditions, and participated in various documentaries. By the time of his death in 2023, he had completed 35 dives to the Titanic, recovering nearly 6,000 items. His life ended during an OceanGate expedition when the Titan submersible suffered a catastrophic pressure hull failure, a loss that prompted an international search effort costing over $6.5 million.
