Why did the Russian Emperor Paul I try to invade British India with Napoleon?
In short: Emperor Paul I of Russia was a mercurial leader who shifted from anti-French crusader to Napoleon's potential ally. His reign was defined by a desperate attempt to reshape the Russian nobility into a chivalric order, a volatile relationship with his mother Catherine the Great, and a final, fatal conspiracy.
Paul I, who reigned from 1796 to 1801, spent his life in the shadow of his mother, Catherine the Great. Their relationship was marked by deep mutual distrust; Catherine excluded him from governance, while Paul, believing he was the rightful heir of his father Peter III, grew increasingly resentful. Upon Catherine's death in 1796, Paul immediately sought to secure his legitimacy by reburying his father with full honors and establishing the Pauline Laws, which mandated strict male-line primogeniture to prevent future succession disputes.
Driven by an idealistic but rigid vision, Paul attempted to transform the Russian nobility into a disciplined, chivalric caste. He viewed his mother's expansionist policies as corrupt and initially recalled troops from abroad. However, his foreign policy proved volatile. After being elected Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller in 1798, he joined the Second Coalition against Revolutionary France to reclaim Malta. Yet, following military setbacks and diplomatic friction with Austria and Britain, he abruptly realigned with France. By 1800, he had effectively declared war on Britain, even planning a joint invasion of British India with Napoleon.
Paul's mercurial behavior and unpopular military reforms—which favored impractical Prussian-style uniforms and harsh discipline—alienated the elite. His erratic governance and hostility toward the nobility created a dangerous political climate. In March 1801, a group of high-ranking officials, including the governor-general of St. Petersburg, Count Peter von Pahlen, orchestrated a coup. With the tacit approval of Paul's son and successor, Alexander I, the conspirators assassinated the Emperor in his bedchamber at the Mikhaylovsky Palace, ending his five-year reign.
