In short: Paul Rusesabagina saved over 1,200 lives during the 1994 Rwandan genocide by sheltering refugees in his hotel. Decades later, the man once celebrated as a humanitarian found himself imprisoned in the country he fled, caught in a complex struggle between international acclaim and the accusations of a modern regime.

In 1994, as Rwanda descended into mass violence, Rusesabagina served as a hotel manager in Kigali. He famously protected 1,268 people, including both Hutus and Tutsis, by leveraging his professional connections, bartering luxury goods like wine and cigars, and pleading with influential figures to keep the militia at bay. His actions, which resulted in no deaths among those he sheltered, were later immortalized in the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda. This period of heroism earned him global recognition, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Following the genocide, Rusesabagina left Rwanda in 1996 and became a vocal critic of President Paul Kagame. His relationship with the state deteriorated significantly, culminating in his 2020 arrest after he was diverted to Kigali on a flight he believed was headed to Burundi. He was subsequently tried and sentenced to 25 years in prison on terrorism-related charges, a conviction he and his supporters vehemently contested. International observers, including a UN working group, characterized his detention as arbitrary and reported that he had been subjected to torture.

After serving two years and seven months in prison, Rusesabagina was released following international intervention. Today, he remains a polarizing figure. While the Rwandan government dismisses his claims of mistreatment and accuses him of dishonesty, Rusesabagina and his family continue to advocate for human rights and democracy in Rwanda. He describes the current political climate as a volatile situation, comparing the country to a boiling volcano, and insists that his ongoing mission is to serve as a voice for those who remain silenced within the nation.
