In short: From crafting Ronald Reagan's most moving addresses to coining George H. W. Bush's most famous catchphrases, Peggy Noonan has been a defining architect of American political rhetoric. Her influence spans decades, moving from the halls of the White House to the pages of The Wall Street Journal.

Peggy Noonan acted as a significant political voice, notably serving as Special Assistant and lead speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan between 1984 and 1986. During this tenure, she authored significant addresses, including Reagan's speech for the 40th anniversary of D-Day and his 1986 address following the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. By incorporating imagery from poet John Magee, that speech earned an eighth-place ranking among 20th-century American political addresses from University of Wisconsin–Madison and Texas A&M University academics.

Her influence extended into the presidency of George H. W. Bush. During his 1988 campaign, Noonan created the phrase 'a kinder, gentler nation' and spread the term 'a thousand points of light.' She also drafted his 1988 Republican National Convention acceptance speech, featuring the iconic vow, 'Read my lips: no new taxes.'

Beyond the White House, Noonan has maintained a prominent media presence. Since 2000, she has contributed the 'Declarations' column to The Wall Street Journal and appeared frequently on NBC's Meet the Press. A Pulitzer Prize for Commentary was awarded to her in 2017 for columns exploring common American virtues amidst a split political season. While her work is highly influential, it has also faced criticism for being overly nostalgic or relying on personal anecdotes to make broad political assertions.

Lately, Noonan has separated herself from the Republican Party during the Donald Trump era. Having abstained from voting for Trump or his Democratic rival during the 2016 and 2020 polls, she later denounced the Republican Party for 'rejecting' Trump after the 2021 United States Capitol attack.
