The internal fractures of a party built on 'People Before Profit'
In short: In the landscape of Irish politics, People Before Profit stands as a staunch eco-socialist force. Yet, beneath its unified public face lies a complex web of internal schisms, ideological shifts, and generational divides that reveal how difficult it is to maintain a singular revolutionary vision in a modern democracy.
Founded in October 2005, People Before Profit (PBP) emerged from the Socialist Workers Party as a Trotskyist organization. While it has successfully elected representatives to the Dáil Éireann and the Northern Ireland Assembly, its internal structure has faced significant turbulence. For years, the party operated under a collective leadership, but in October 2024, it shifted to a single-leader model with Richard Boyd Barrett. This move was intended to provide a 'familiar face' for media communication and debates, but it sparked significant internal friction.
The party's identity is currently being pulled in multiple directions. In 2025, a significant faction known as the Red Network resigned, accusing the leadership of prioritizing middle-class appeal and 'culture war' issues over the needs of the working class. They argued the party was becoming politically incoherent. Simultaneously, the Marxist Republican Network (MRN) emerged in 2026, advocating for a more explicitly communist, class-independent stance that rejects even the Good Friday Agreement and calls for a 32-county workers' republic.
These tensions are not just ideological but generational. In 2026, a group of 15 prominent members resigned from the Socialist Workers Network (SWN) due to a 'hegemonic' and 'sect-based' culture that marginalized younger members. These departures have shifted the internal balance of power, making the Rise network and independent socialist Eddie Conlon more dominant. From its stance on 'Lexit' and water charges to its calls for nationalizing agri-corporations, PBP remains a potent force, even as it grapples with the paradox of maintaining revolutionary purity while seeking electoral success.
