The woodpecker whose name means "wearing a hat"
In short: The pileated woodpecker is the largest living woodpecker in North America, but its name reveals a surprising connection to ancient human fashion. Derived from the Latin word pileatus, its name suggests it is adorned with a specific type of headwear worn by the Romans.
The specific name 'pileatus' refers to the pileus, a brimless, conical hat that was a staple of ancient Roman attire. This linguistic connection highlights how naturalists often used human cultural artifacts to describe the striking physical features of the natural world. In the case of the pileated woodpecker, the name perfectly captures the bird's most distinctive feature: a flaming-red crest that sits atop its black plumage like a crown.
Beyond its fashion-inspired name, the bird is a master of structural engineering. It is famous for creating large, nearly rectangular excavations in trees to reach its primary prey, carpenter ants and wood-boring beetle larvae. These birds can drum at a remarkable rate of nearly 17 beats per second in short bursts to declare territory or attract mates. While these excavations can sometimes weaken small trees, they provide essential habitats for a variety of other species, including owls, bats, and pine martens.
The bird's history is also marked by a significant recovery. During the 1920s, the species faced a sharp population decline due to the clearing of North American forests for agriculture and logging. However, thanks to its adaptability and a vast geographic range spanning from the eastern U.S. to the Pacific coast and southern Canada, the population rebounded. By the early 21st century, the population had grown to over two million birds, securing its status as a species of least concern.
Interestingly, while the bird's appearance inspired the famous cartoon character Woody Woodpecker, the character's actual origin was an acorn woodpecker. However, the pileated woodpecker's distinctive calls and striking silhouette remain the closest visual and auditory match to the iconic animation.
