The Acorn Woodpecker Builds a Massive, Living Pantry That Looks Like Swiss Cheese

In short: Acorn woodpeckers are not your average birds. Instead of burying food in the ground like squirrels, these gregarious black and red birds drill thousands of individual holes into trees to create massive, organized granaries. This intricate storage system ensures they have enough food to survive the harsh winter months ahead.

Acorn woodpeckers, found from Oregon and California down to Colombia, are unique in their approach to food storage. Unlike other species that hide acorns in existing tree cavities or bury them in the soil, these birds meticulously drill thousands of small, individual holes into trees to house their winter supplies. Biologist Walter Koenig, who has studied these birds for decades at the Hastings Natural History Reservation in Carmel Valley, notes that they are the only animals known to store acorns in this specific, individual manner.

These granaries often span one or two trees located in close proximity, giving the bark a distinct, Swiss cheese-like appearance. The birds are highly selective about their construction sites, utilizing various species including pines, oaks, sycamores, redwoods, and even palm trees. Crucially, they avoid areas with sap, as moisture causes the stored acorns to rot. By boring only into the bark or using dead snags, they ensure the acorns remain dry and protected from other animals that might try to steal their hard-earned harvest.

While their namesake suggests a singular diet, these birds are opportunistic feeders. During the spring and summer, they supplement their intake by catching insects, consuming oak flowers, and drinking sap from shallow holes they bore into trees like coast live oaks. Their social nature is as striking as their architecture; they are known for their loud, distinctive 'waka-waka-waka' calls and their tendency to work in groups. Whether they are feeding chicks or tending to their massive wooden pantries, these avian performers remain a fascinating fixture of the oak forests they inhabit.
