A new political coalition emerges in Serbia to champion European integration and democratic reform
In short: The Platform for a European Serbia, or PES, formed in June 2026 to unite opposition parties under a pro-European banner. Despite internal disagreements and shifting alliances, the coalition is set to compete in the upcoming parliamentary elections, aiming to challenge the incumbent government's policies and advocate for closer ties with Europe.
The origins of the Platform for a European Serbia trace back to December 2025, when five opposition groups signed a cooperation agreement at the European Movement in Serbia offices. Initially known as the EU5, the group sought to coordinate efforts regarding Serbia's potential accession to the European Union. Throughout early 2026, these parties engaged with representatives from the European Parliament and officials from Germany, Sweden, and Spain to solidify their pro-European stance.
Internal cohesion proved difficult to maintain. By May 2026, the Green–Left Front distanced itself from the group to support the Student List, leading to a reduction in membership. Following further negotiations, the coalition was formally established in June 2026 by the Party of Freedom and Justice, Serbia Centre, and Solidarity. While the coalition maintains an open-door policy for other pro-European entities, it has faced significant friction; some members of the Serbia Centre party resigned in protest of the decision to participate in the 2026 parliamentary elections, preferring instead to back the Student List.
The coalition's platform, centered on the Forward to Europe program, prioritizes anti-corruption measures, judicial integrity, and the enhancement of public health and education systems. Led by ballot holders Marinika Tepić and Zdravko Ponoš, the group officially registered as the European Serbia electoral list in September 2026. Despite polling between 4.2% and 4.5% during the summer months, the coalition faces a complex political landscape, balancing its commitment to European integration against the competing influence of the Student List and internal dissent regarding electoral strategy.
