The final chapter for a legendary trainer marks a massive shift in animation history
In short: After twenty-five seasons, the global phenomenon known as Pokémon concluded a monumental era. The final installment of the Journeys arc served as a farewell to the iconic duo of Ash Ketchum and Pikachu, paving the way for a new generation of protagonists to take the lead in the franchise.
Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series represents the twenty-fifth season of the long-running anime. Spanning from December 2021 to March 2023 in Japan, this final chapter of the Journeys narrative followed Ash Ketchum and his companion Goh as they traversed eight distinct regions. The story focused on Ash climbing the competitive ladder of the World Coronation Series to reach the Master Class, while Goh pursued his goal of locating the elusive Mew through Project Mew.
This season holds historical weight as the concluding run for the original main characters, Ash and Pikachu, who had anchored the series since its inception. The Team Rocket trio also made their final appearances during this tenure. Following the conclusion of these adventures, the franchise transitioned to Pokémon Horizons: The Series in April 2023, introducing two fresh leads, Liko and Roy, to carry the mantle forward.
The production was marked by a diverse musical landscape, featuring various opening and ending themes that paid homage to the series' history. Beyond its narrative impact, the show garnered critical recognition, securing the top anime series honor at the 4th VP Choice Awards held in the Philippines in March 2023. The season also integrated special content, such as the four-part Arceus Chronicles, which drew inspiration from the Legends: Arceus game and expanded the scope of the animated world.
The legacy of this season is defined by its role as a bridge between eras. By culminating the research-focused adventures of Ash and Goh and integrating nostalgic elements alongside new regional settings like Galar, the series managed to satisfy long-term fans while preparing the audience for a complete reboot of the show's central cast. It remains a pivotal moment in the evolution of one of the world's most enduring media properties.
