How Pokémon Legends: Arceus reinvented a decades-old formula by looking into the past
In short: By shifting the focus from competitive battles to exploration and field research, Pokémon Legends: Arceus broke the series' long-standing mold. Set in the ancient Hisui region, the game treats Pokémon as wild, unpredictable forces of nature, offering a fresh, immersive experience that resonated with millions of players worldwide upon its 2022 release.
Released on 28 January 2022 for the Nintendo Switch, Pokémon Legends: Arceus serves as a prequel to the 2006 titles Diamond and Pearl. The game transports the player to the Hisui region—a historical version of the Sinnoh region inspired by early Japanese colonization—where they join the Survey Corps to document the local wildlife. Unlike previous mainline entries that emphasized trainer battles, this title prioritizes the completion of the Pokédex through direct interaction with wild Pokémon in expansive, biome-based areas.
The gameplay mechanics represent a significant departure from series traditions. Players can capture Pokémon in the overworld without engaging in turn-based combat, though they must still contend with aggressive creatures that can physically harm the protagonist. When battles do occur, the system introduces a tactical layer where players can trade damage for turn priority. The world itself is populated by 'Alpha' Pokémon—larger, more powerful variants—and features 'Noble' Pokémon that players must calm using balms during boss encounters. These changes, alongside the absence of multiplayer battles, led critics to compare the experience to titles like Monster Hunter and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
The game's narrative centers on a spacetime rift caused by the legendary Pokémon Giratina, which the player must seal by gathering Plates and eventually confronting the creator deity, Arceus. Commercially, the title was a major success, selling 14.83 million copies by 31 March 2023. It outperformed other Switch-era Pokémon games in its initial week, moving 6.5 million units globally. Despite some criticism regarding its graphical quality, the game received widespread acclaim for its fluid exploration and the sense of freedom it provided, with many reviewers calling it the most significant overhaul to the franchise's formula since its inception.
