How Twenty Bull Riders Built a Global Sports Empire From a Hotel Room
In short: In 1992, twenty professional bull riders pooled their money in a Scottsdale hotel room to break away from existing rodeo organizations. Their goal was simple: create a better product for fans. Today, that vision has evolved into a massive international league with over 800 members and multi-million dollar prize purses.
The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) was born on April 12, 1992, when twenty riders and businessman Sam Applebaum each contributed $1,000 to establish an organization that prioritized the sport's top talent. At the time, these riders were competing in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and the year-old Bull Riders Only. By 1998, the PBR had outlasted its rival, Bull Riders Only, and began a period of rapid expansion. The organization moved its headquarters from Colorado Springs to Pueblo in 2007, and eventually to Fort Worth, Texas, in 2024.
The PBR's growth was marked by significant professionalization. In 1996, the league mandated protective vests for all contestants, and by 2009, helmets became standard on its televised Premier Series. The financial stakes also shifted dramatically; while the 1994 championship season offered over $330,000 in prizes, by 2008, that figure had climbed to over $11 million. This evolution included the introduction of the Built Ford Tough Series in 2003 and the Unleash the Beast Series in 2018, both reflecting the league's ability to secure major corporate sponsorships.
Beyond individual competition, the PBR has experimented with team formats and global outreach. The 2022 launch of the PBR Team Series introduced a regional team structure, complete with a championship trophy shaped like a giant belt buckle. The organization has also expanded its footprint through international tours in Canada, Brazil, and Australia. Following its acquisition by WME-IMG in 2015, the PBR was eventually folded into TKO Group Holdings in 2025, a $3.25 billion deal that solidified its status as a premier sports property. Today, the league continues to refine its structure, including the 2023 decision to count only U.S. Premier Series points toward the world championship race.
