The bull rider who conquered the impossible bull Red Rock
In short: In 1987, Lane Frost achieved what no other cowboy could: a qualified ride on the legendary bull Red Rock. His dominance in the PRCA made him a superstar, but his sudden death in 1989 left a legacy that changed the sport of bull riding forever.
Lane Frost was a premier professional rodeo cowboy who reached the pinnacle of his sport in 1987, when he became the PRCA World Champion bull rider at age 24. His career was defined by extraordinary feats, most notably his ability to ride Red Rock, a bull that had successfully resisted 309 professional attempts without a single qualified ride. During a special 'Challenge of the Champions' series, Frost managed to score a qualified ride on Red Rock four times in seven matches.
Tragedy struck on July 30, 1989, at Cheyenne Frontier Days. After completing a successful 85-point ride on the Brahma bull Takin' Care of Business, Frost was knocked down and pinned by the animal. It is assumed the bull's weight pressed his horn into Frost's back, breaking ribs and severing a main artery. Frost, who was 25 years old, died from these massive internal injuries on the arena floor.
Frost's death prompted significant safety evolutions in rodeo. Following the accident, his friend Cody Lambert created the protective vest that is now standard for professional riders. By 1996, the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) made these vests mandatory, a standard eventually adopted by all bull riding organizations. Frost's legacy lives on via the Lane Frost/Brent Thurman Award, which recognises the top-scoring individual ride during the PBR World Finals, and the Lane Frost Health and Rehabilitation Center located in Hugo, Oklahoma.
