In short: Ranger School is not a special operations unit, but a leadership laboratory designed to push soldiers to their breaking point. Through three distinct phases, students endure near-constant movement, severe sleep deprivation, and extreme caloric restriction, all while commanding missions in environments ranging from Georgia mountains to Florida swamps.

Established in 1950, Ranger School is a 61-day course focused on small-unit tactics and combat leadership. It is not affiliated with the 75th Ranger Regiment, though it serves as a mandatory prerequisite for that unit's officers and non-commissioned officers. The curriculum is divided into three phases: the Darby Phase at Fort Benning, the Mountain Phase near Dahlonega, and the Swamp Phase at Eglin Air Force Base. Each phase forces students to operate under intense psychological and physical stress, often while carrying 65 to 90 pounds of gear.

The training environment is intentionally punishing. Students typically receive about 3.5 hours of sleep per day and consume 2,200 calories or fewer. They conduct roughly 20 hours of training daily, patrolling over 200 miles throughout the course. The first five days, known as the Ranger Assessment Phase, historically account for 60 percent of all student failures. Candidates must pass rigorous physical tests, including a 12-mile ruck march in under three hours and a series of water confidence obstacles that must be completed without safety harnesses.

The course has evolved significantly since its inception. While it was once mandatory for all Regular Army officers in the late 1960s, it returned to a voluntary model in 1972. In 2015, the school permanently opened to women. The first female graduates, who completed the course that same year, were recognized by leadership for proving their capability under the same rigorous standards as their peers. Today, the school continues to serve as a crucible for military personnel from all branches of the U.S. armed forces and various allied nations, aiming to build tactical proficiency and mental resilience in future combat leaders.
