The digital shadow army fighting for a French 'reconquest'
In short: When a political movement seeks to reclaim a national identity, it often builds an invisible infrastructure first. Beyond the rallies and slogans of France's Reconquête party lies a covert operation designed to manipulate the very foundations of online knowledge.
Founded in late 2021 by journalist Éric Zemmour, Reconquête—stylized as R!—is a far-right French party whose name explicitly references the Iberian Reconquista. The party's platform centers on 'reconquesting' France through policies like de-Islamisation, the banning of the hijab in public spaces, and a 'Colbertist' economic approach. Unlike many contemporary far-right movements that draw primarily from the working class, Reconquête finds significant support among older, male voters in ideologically Right-leaning bourgeois urban strongholds, such as western Paris.
The party’s influence is bolstered by sophisticated digital tactics. In early 2022, an embedded reporter uncovered a 'shadow army' tasked with covertly targeting Facebook and Wikipedia. This operation included a specific task force known as "WikiZedia," which was dedicated to editing the French Wikipedia page for Zemmour—the site's most-viewed article. The group aimed to promote the candidate by aggressively linking to his profile, leading to several high-profile editors being blocked by administrators and triggering an alert from Wikimedia France to the watchdog agency ARCOM.
Despite its rapid growth—reaching 100,000 members by February 2022 and winning five seats in the 2024 European Parliament election—the party faced significant setbacks. In June 2024, it failed to win any seats in the first round of the French legislative elections. The movement remains defined by a tension between its rapid mobilization through digital manipulation and its struggle for sustained electoral success amidst internal fractures and expulsions.
