How a Canadian television show turned Toronto into a global stage for ancient artifacts
In short: Relic Hunter, a globe-trotting adventure series that aired from 1999 to 2002, followed Professor Sydney Fox as she recovered supernatural artifacts. Despite its international premise, the show was filmed almost entirely in the Toronto area, using local landmarks and clever set design to stand in for locations across the world.
Starring Tia Carrere as the unorthodox archaeologist Sydney Fox and Christien Anholt as her reserved assistant Nigel Bailey, Relic Hunter was designed specifically around Carrere's personal skills and interests. The series focused on the duo's quest to retrieve ancient relics for museums or descendants, often pitting them against rival hunters motivated by greed. Each episode followed a consistent structure: a historical flashback, a present-day mission, and a final scene at their home base, Trinity College, to resolve the artifact's fate.
The production relied heavily on the versatility of the Toronto landscape. The University of Toronto's St. George campus, including Victoria College and the Soldiers' Tower, served as the backdrop for Trinity College. For more exotic settings, the crew utilized local sites, such as the HMCS Haida—a Tribal Class destroyer—which was disguised with Russian signage and altered markings to hide its Canadian origins during filming. While the show was intended to be a light-hearted adventure, it incorporated fantasy and science fiction elements, with relics frequently possessing advanced technology or supernatural powers.
Running for 66 episodes over three seasons, the show was a collaborative effort involving various international networks. Although the series was filmed in widescreen 16:9, it was primarily broadcast in a 4/3 pan and scan format. The character dynamics evolved over the seasons, with student secretary Claudia, played by Lindy Booth, serving as the office anchor before being replaced in the third season by the more bureaucratically capable Karen Petrusky. Despite its cancellation after the initial contract, the series maintained a global footprint, airing in numerous countries under localized titles ranging from 'Treasure Huntress' in Germany to 'Raiders of the Lost Relics' in Hungary.
