In short: KTM entered the premier class of motorcycle road racing with a bold engineering choice: a V4 engine paired with a steel trellis frame chassis, a configuration unique to their factory team. From a standing start in 2014 to their first podium in 2018, their rapid ascent reshaped the MotoGP landscape.

When Pit Beirer announced in September 2014 that KTM would join the MotoGP World Championship for 2017, the project was essentially a blank slate. The team faced the immense challenge of developing the RC16 machine from scratch. By October 2015, Alex Hofmann conducted the first track test at the Red Bull Ring. The development process relied heavily on a roster of test riders, including Mika Kallio, who eventually debuted the bike as a wildcard at the 2016 Valencian Grand Prix.

The team's technical philosophy diverged from the industry standard. While competitors favored different chassis designs, KTM committed to a steel trellis frame. This unconventional approach required rigorous testing across circuits like Jerez, Brno, and Mugello. Despite early technical setbacks—such as a sensor failure during their 2016 debut—the team steadily improved. By the 2017 Czech Republic Grand Prix, Pol Espargaró secured the team's first top-10 finish, signaling that their development trajectory was gaining momentum.

The 2018 season proved to be a crucible of adversity, marked by injuries to both Mika Kallio and Pol Espargaró. Yet, the 2018 Valencian Community Grand Prix served as a breakthrough, yielding the team's first-ever podium finish in the top class. This momentum culminated on 9 August 2020, when Brad Binder secured KTM's first MotoGP victory at the Czech Grand Prix. Today, the KTM GP Academy continues this legacy by nurturing young talent through a structured pipeline from the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup to the premier grid, ensuring a steady influx of riders like Binder and Pedro Acosta.
