In short: Founded in 1997, Relic Entertainment has become a powerhouse of real-time strategy gaming. From the cosmic scale of Homeworld to the gritty battlefields of Company of Heroes, the studio's proprietary engines have pushed graphical boundaries and changed how players experience digital warfare.

Relic Entertainment, originally known as THQ Canada Inc., was founded in May 1997 by a group of seven developers, including Alex Garden and Rob Cunningham. The studio quickly established itself as a specialist in real-time strategy (RTS) games. Their debut title, Homeworld, released on September 28, 1999, achieved significant critical acclaim and commercial success, setting a high bar for the genre.

A core component of Relic's success is its technical innovation through in-house engine development. The Essence Engine, introduced with the 2006 release of Company of Heroes, was notable for its advanced graphical effects like high-dynamic-range lighting and dynamic lighting. It was also among the first RTS engines capable of producing detailed facial animations. This technology evolved through several generations, including Essence 2.0, which enhanced lighting and shading for Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, and Essence 3.0, which introduced DirectX 11 support and the 'TrueSight' visibility technology.

The studio's history is marked by significant industry shifts and ownership changes. After being acquired by THQ in early 2004 for approximately US$10 million, Relic was later sold to Sega on January 22, 2013, for US$26.6 million during THQ's bankruptcy proceedings. Sega outbid ZeniMax Media by US$300,000 in that auction. After operating under Sega's European division, Relic secured an external investment in March 2024, allowing the studio to split from Sega and operate independently.
