In short: A study of grade 10 students in Ethiopia found that while learners generally hold a positive attitude toward learning English as a foreign language, their enthusiasm is shaped by a mix of social and environmental factors. While interactions with peers and parents foster a positive outlook, the physical classroom environment and the quality of instruction can create significant hurdles.

The researchers used a mixed-methods approach, surveying 103 students and conducting focus group discussions and interviews with teachers. They identified that social influences, such as exposure to native speakers and peer groups, are key drivers of positive engagement.

Conversely, the study highlighted that poor classroom arrangements and physical environments negatively impact student attitudes. A notable exception was the textbooks, which were viewed favorably. The study is limited by its specific geographic focus on one secondary school.

Why it matters: Improving physical classroom environments and social support can significantly enhance student motivation in language learning.
