Speech recognition websites can improve vocabulary and reduce speaking anxiety
In short: A quasi-experimental study of 232 Indonesian secondary school students found that using Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) websites can enhance language learning. Students using specialized websites outperformed a control group by increasing their knowledge of 40 targeted words, lowering their speaking anxiety, and increasing their enjoyment of the language.
The study used two different ASR-based websites to intervene in regular English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes. While the quantitative results showed significant improvements in vocabulary and emotional well-being, the researchers noted that more in-depth evaluations are needed to understand the long-term effects on speaking skills.
Why it matters: Speech recognition technology may help learners master vocabulary while making the process more enjoyable and less stressful.
