How Franz Kafka inspired the survival horror of Resident Evil: Revelations 2
In short: While many horror games rely on jump scares, Resident Evil: Revelations 2 turned to the existential dread of Franz Kafka. By weaving the themes of his literary works into its episodic structure, the developers created a unique narrative experience that explores the fragility of sanity and the weight of family trauma.
Released by Capcom in 2015, Resident Evil: Revelations 2 was designed as a fan-driven side series intended to capture the classic horror feel that long-time players missed. Unlike the more action-oriented main series, this title focuses on cooperative gameplay and atmospheric tension. The game’s four episodes—Penal Colony, Contemplation, The Judgment, and The Metamorphosis—are direct allusions to the works of Franz Kafka, a choice made by scenario writer Dai Satō to provide deeper thematic resonance and immersion.
The plot follows two parallel timelines. In the past, Claire Redfield and Moira Burton are kidnapped from a TerraSave party and taken to a mysterious island in the Baltic Sea. In the present, Moira’s father, Barry Burton, arrives on the island to search for her, accompanied by a young girl named Natalia Korda. The characters are forced to wear bracelets that record their fear levels, a mechanic that mirrors the game's focus on the psychological toll of survival. The antagonists, known as the Afflicted, are humans driven insane by torturous experiments, further emphasizing the game's preoccupation with the breakdown of the human mind.
The game received mixed to positive reviews, with critics praising the character dynamics and the cooperative mechanics, while noting technical shortcomings in graphics and level design. Despite these critiques, the title proved commercially successful, reaching 4 million units sold by December 31, 2025. The soundtrack, composed by Kota Suzuki, utilized unconventional sound concepts like 'iron' and 'water' to enhance the dark, claustrophobic atmosphere. Ultimately, the game stands as a notable experiment in blending high-concept literature with the survival horror genre, offering a narrative that remains memorable for its campy twists and complex character arcs.
