How Rey Mysterio became a global icon while forced to wrestle without his mask.
In short: Born into a wrestling dynasty, Rey Mysterio revolutionized the sport by bringing the high-flying lucha libre style to American audiences. Despite becoming a household name, he faced a career-defining crisis in 1999 when he was forced to unmask, a move he later described as a deeply damaging professional mistake.
Born Óscar Gutiérrez in 1974, the future star was trained by his uncle, Rey Misterio, debuting in Mexico at age 14. By the early 1990s, he was a standout in Asistencia Asesoría y Administración (AAA), mastering the aerial maneuvers that would define his career. His transition to the United States via World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1996 proved pivotal, as he helped popularize the cruiserweight division and lucha libre for a mainstream American audience.
The trajectory of his career shifted dramatically during his time in WCW. In February 1999, at SuperBrawl IX, Mysterio was forced to remove his mask following a loss in a tag team match against Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. Mysterio has been vocal about his opposition to this decision, noting that the mask was central to his identity for his family and fans. He felt the unmasking was a poor creative choice that lacked the emotional weight of a proper feud, leaving him with no choice but to comply or lose his job.
Despite the frustration of working unmasked until 2002, Mysterio reinvented himself as a 'giant killer,' defeating much larger opponents like Bam Bam Bigelow and Kevin Nash. His resilience eventually led him to WWE, where he resumed wearing his iconic mask and achieved significant success, including winning the 2006 Royal Rumble and multiple world championships. Today, he remains a celebrated figure in professional wrestling, having successfully integrated his son, Dominik, into the industry, bridging the gap between his own storied past and the future of the sport.
