Why a legendary horror franchise intentionally chose a simpler gameplay experience
In short: When developing Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, Capcom's producers made a radical decision to abandon the complex mechanics of Resident Evil 4. They pivoted toward an accessible, on-rails shooter design, specifically targeting the Wii audience's preference for ease of use over high-level difficulty.
In 2007, Capcom and Cavia released Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles for the Nintendo Wii. While the series was known for its intense survival horror, the developers, including producer Masachical Kawata, intentionally moved away from the complex operability seen in Resident Evil 4. Kawata noted in an interview with Famitsu that Wii users prefer 'easiness' and that the more intricate mechanics of previous entries could act as an obstacle to enjoyment. This led to a 'lower difficulty level' designed to reduce elements that might only appeal to enthusiasts.
The resulting 'on-rails' gameplay style follows a pre-set path, utilizing the Wii Remote to target enemies. While players can use the Wii Zapper peripheral or the Nunchuk for limited movement and melee, the core experience is a streamlined light gun shooter. This design choice allowed the game to retell pivotal moments from the series—such as the 1998 Raccoon City outbreaks and the 2003 Russian mission—through a more accessible lens. The game even features a system where players earn 'Stars' based on performance, which are then used to upgrade weapons.
Despite the simplified mechanics, the game served as a massive narrative retrospective, exposing the Umbrella Corporation's secret motives through the narration of former scientist Albert Wesker. It integrated characters like Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Ada Wong into scenarios spanning several years of the franchise's timeline. The game's success was significant, selling over 1.4 million copies worldwide and spawning an extensive ecosystem of tie-in products, including graphic novels, novels, and a 49-track original soundtrack.
