How a college wide receiver became one of the NFL's most feared defensive weapons
In short: Tariq Woolen transitioned from a college wide receiver to an elite NFL cornerback, defying draft projections. His rare combination of size and speed propelled him to a Pro Bowl selection as a rookie, marking a rapid ascent that reshaped the Seattle Seahawks' secondary and eventually led to a championship victory.
Born in 1999, Tariq Woolen began his collegiate career at the University of Texas at San Antonio as a wide receiver. After redshirting his freshman year and playing the position for two seasons, he made a pivotal move to cornerback during his redshirt sophomore year. This transition proved transformative, as he utilized his physical stature and exceptional speed—evidenced by a 4.26-second 40-yard dash at the 2022 NFL Combine—to dominate at the defensive level.
Despite his physical gifts, Woolen was not a top-tier draft prospect, with analysts ranking him between the eighth and thirteenth best cornerback available. The Seattle Seahawks selected him in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He quickly exceeded expectations, earning the starting role during his rookie training camp. His impact was immediate; he became the only rookie in a decade to record interceptions in four consecutive games, earning him NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors and a spot on the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie Team.
Woolen's professional trajectory continued to evolve under different coaching regimes in Seattle. He remained a defensive cornerstone, contributing to the team's success, including a victory in Super Bowl LX where he recorded four tackles. By March 2026, his reputation as a high-level defender was solidified, leading him to secure a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles valued at up to $15 million. His journey from an overlooked college prospect to a Super Bowl champion illustrates the significant impact of positional versatility and athletic development in professional football.
