How a single game against Northern Illinois launched a defensive superstar
In short: In 2022, a college cornerback achieved a feat unseen in the FBS since the turn of the millennium. By recording four interceptions and two pick-sixes in one afternoon, Quinyon Mitchell transformed from a standout recruit into a national sensation, eventually paving his way to NFL stardom.
The path to the NFL's elite often requires a moment of pure, statistical impossibility. For Quinyon Mitchell, that moment arrived during his 202<0xC2>2 season with the Toledo Rockets. This performance, which tied a school interception record, earned him national defensive player of the week honors and established him as a premier talent in the Mid-American Conference (MAC).
Mitchell's rise was characterized by consistent dominance. After a promising start as a true freshman in the 2020 season, he became a full-time starter in 2022, leading the country in passes defended with 25. His collegiate accolades continued into 2023, when he became Toledo's first player to be named a semifinalist for the Chuck Bednarik Award and earned back-to-back All-American honors. This trajectory led the Philadelphia Eagles to select him 22nd overall in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft.
In the professional ranks, Mitchell earned the nickname 'Quinyonamo Bay'—a play on Guantanamo Bay—due to his ability to effectively imprison wide receivers. During his 2024 rookie campaign, he famously held Terry McLaurin to zero targets and zero yards in a single game. His efficiency was unmatched; he finished the season leading all NFL cornerbacks in catch rate allowed at 41.6% and allowed zero touchdowns. His defensive skill secured First-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl accolades by 2025, establishing him as a vital Eagles defender.
